For the fourth year in a row, UTS is hosting Open Education Week. Together with great minds to share the opportunities of open education (OE), we continue to advocate and build understanding of the role of OE in enhancing learning and teaching practices.

Open education refers to a movement that seeks to increase access to educational resources and opportunities by removing barriers such as cost, geography and other factors that may limit access to education. It can take various forms, including open educational resources (OER), open textbooks, massive open online courses (MOOCs), open access journals and other educational initiatives that aim to provide learning experiences that are accessible, adaptable, and inclusive. The underlying principles of open education include collaboration, sharing and open access, which can help to enable a socially just education.

What’s in store for our 2026 edition?

This year we have a special edition, where we engage in provocative discussions and open platforms for new perspectives. We will also cross-promote OE activities happening across the Australian universities.

We hope you will attend as many events as you can and engage in the discussions. Our aim goes beyond the week itself, we want to see Open Educational Practices embedded in learning and teaching, and increase access to inclusive educational materials. We will exploring topics such as the compatibility of GenAI and Open Education, and the myth around Wikipedia and its untapped potential for enhancing learning.

We will also be hosting an in-person celebration in Sydney, so come join us as we celebrate UTS OE champions! We will be launching the book of our very own Dr Amara Atif (FEIT) and putting your knowledge to the test with a copyright and licensing trivia, hosted by UTS Copyright Lead Anna Troiano.
