Changing Landscapes Seminar Series: Assessment 2030 and the future of assessment design | 18 August

The sector is changing, and each university is tackling that change in its own way.

In this session, Professor Mollie Dollinger will share with the UTS community Curtin’s Assessment 2030 initiative, their distinct response to the challenges and opportunities of the AI context.

As will be discussed, in A2030 change at Curtin was led through several key principles, including distributed leadership, clear and simple minimum standards for courses to support disciplinary nuancing, and harnessing the transformation opportunity as a chance to shine a light on talented educators. Eighteen months in, over 40 flagship courses have been transformed and more than 1000 units updated, and as Curtin builds their brand as a university that recognises excellent teaching, with their externally facing website now attracting over 30,000 visits.

In the second part of the talk, Mollie will then shift gears to discuss what is likely the most interesting topic in the higher education sector right now, Lane 2 or ‘open’ assessments.

Because it is in Lane 2 that educators set assessment security to one side and design tasks to help students become ethical and independent professionals. Drawing on examples from across disciplines, Mollie makes the case that open assessments not only develop students’ evaluative judgement but form a key element in our ultimate goal towards providing defensible assurance of learning.

Professor Mollie Dollinger is an institutional change leader in Australian higher education, with a track record of driving learning and teaching reform across three universities. At Curtin University she holds two senior portfolios. As Director of Assessment 2030, she leads institutional-wide curriculum and assessment transformation for more than 50,000 students across 250 courses, four faculties, and five global campuses. As Director of Teaching Innovation and the Scholarship of Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Health Sciences, she further develops frameworks and programs that support teaching-focused academics and strengthen the adoption of educational technologies.
