2030 Practice Showcase Series: Oral Assessment, Unscripted: Two Academics on What It Actually Takes | 19 August

Oral assessment is gaining ground as a way to verify learning and reduce reliance on AI, but the pitch rarely matches the practice. This session brings together two UTS academics’ first-hand experience designing, running, preparing students for and marking oral assessments in their subjects.

Learn the logistical decisions nobody warns you about, the trade-offs between rigour, inclusion, and workload, and what actually happens when you sit a nervous student down and ask them to defend their thinking on the spot.

Alongside reflections on implementation and evaluation, we will share practical strategies used to build student confidence and readiness for Interactive Oral Assessments.

Expect a candid account of what worked, what didn’t, and what we’d change next time. This session explores both sides of the assessment process; what it takes to prepare students to succeed and evaluate them effectively.

Intended audience: Academics and subject coordinators across any discipline weighing up oral, viva, or interactive assessment formats, particularly those grappling with AI-proofing assessment.

A/Prof Adrian Camilleri, is an Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Technology Sydney Business School and Director of the UTS Behavioural Lab.
