Our next FFYE forum explores a key transition challenge faced by nearly all commencing students: ‘I’m doing this degree to go somewhere’. How do we help students connect their studies to future careers with confidence and capability?

As outlined in our blog post on the Curriculum Principle of Transition, one key strategy is to orient students toward work, professional practice, and careers. Practices include:

  • Use professional language and treat students as future professionals
  • Contextualise class activities using real-world professional examples
  • Develop transferable skills such as time management, communication, and collaboration
  • Foster professional identity through reflective writing and self-awareness
  • Invite alumni to share insights into career pathways and industry expectations

As our student cohorts continue to grow in diversity (see Power BI Student 360 – Subject Dashboard and Diversity Dashboards), this forum invites participants to explore intentional curriculum-to-careers practices – collaborative classwork, WIL principles, career learning development practices, equity-focused workshops, FFYE grant practices and more.

Together, we’ll explore how to build the confidence and capability of all students—within the curriculum and beyond—ensuring every learner is equipped for meaningful, purpose-driven career pathways. As well as a range of presentations, we have designed numerous opportunities for collaboration, sharing practice, and learning from one another.

This online forum is open to all who work with or support students—and we especially welcome student voices. Join us in shaping inclusive, career-connected learning.

What is the UTS FFYE Program?

The UTS FFYE (First and Further Year Experience) Program is an institution-wide program designed to support the successful transition of students in their journey through their degrees and into the workplace. The program has three foci: curriculum, people and the university infrastructure, drawing from community and connection in collaboration with academic and professional staff.

One key element of the program is community building. FFYE forums (regular meetings) and the FFYE community (MS Teams) provide spaces for sharing, learning, and ongoing collaborations that connect research, practice, and student experience. Contact Kathy Egea (FFYE coordinator) to join.
