If you have identified that MS Teams is right for your needs, you can use the Microsoft Education function in Canvas to create a new site with all your students enrolled.
Important update for teaching with Microsoft Teams in Spring 2025
From 11 September 2025, this integration has changed and is now called ‘Microsoft Education’. This change won’t impact or change your existing MS Teams sites, but a few steps are needed if you want students to continue accessing MS Teams from your Canvas site.

Creating a new Microsoft Teams site
This resource guides you through the process of creating a MS Teams site from within Canvas using the Microsoft Education LTI. When you create a MS Teams site in this way, students will be automatically added and updated in MS Teams according to their enrolment status in Canvas. Students will be able to access your subject’s Teams site directly from Canvas.
How to set up a new MS Teams site from Canvas
To create a new MS Teams site from Canvas, your subject site needs to be Published.
Enable Microsoft Sync in Settings
- Go to your Canvas Subject site
- Select ‘Settings’ from the subject menu
- Select the ‘Integrations’ tab
- Enable ‘Microsoft Sync’
Enable Microsoft Education LTI in the subject menu
- Go to your Canvas Subject site
- Select ‘Settings’ from the subject menu
- Select the ‘Navigation’ tab
- Scroll down to find ‘Microsoft Education’ in the list. Click the three dots next to this and then ‘Enable’, or drag it up into the course navigation menu, then select “Save”.
Sign in to your UTS Microsoft account
- Click on ‘Microsoft Education’ from your Canvas subject menu
- Select ‘Sign in’ from your UTS Microsoft account
- Enter your UTS email and Password into the pop-up window
- Verify with multi-factor authentication (Okta or SMS)
Setup Microsoft Education
- Once you have logged in to the LTI, click ‘Continue setup’
- Ensure Teams is toggled on and enabled, then click ‘Done’
- Click on ‘Teams’. You will see the message ‘No teams connected yet’
Run the Microsoft Sync
Return to ‘Settings’ and the ‘Integrations’ tab.
- Select the arrow to adjacent to ‘Microsoft Sync’ to show more details
- Select the ‘Sync Now’ button to create a Teams site with all your students added
Teams site creation can take around 10 minutes.
Activate your Teams site
Select ‘Activate’ in Teams to make that space visible to students.

Create private channels in your Teams site
Private channels aren’t automatically created. If you want to use private channels in your MS Teams site, you will need to set them up manually, or contact the Ed Hub for assistance.
