The Rubric tool is used to communicate expectations of quality to guide students in their assignments. You can create and manage different kinds of rubrics in your Canvas course.
You can set up and manage rubrics in the Rubrics area of your Canvas site. Rubrics can be added to assignments, graded quizzes and graded discussions. You can create a rubric with or without scaled criteria, and with or without numerical scoring.

Tips for using Rubrics in Canvas
- Create and manage rubrics from the Rubrics area of your Canvas site.
- If you want to use a rubric for grading in Speedgrader, remember to select the Use this rubric for assignment grading checkbox when adding a rubric to an assignment.
- You can’t edit a rubric after it’s been added to more than one assignment in a Canvas course, or once a rubric has been used to assess a student (i.e. once marking has commenced). However, rubrics can be duplicated and used with other assignments.
- Rubrics can be archived and deleted. Archived rubrics can’t be added to assignments, but if they are in use, they will remain in use. When you delete a rubric, Canvas will remove the rubric from any assignments in the course and remove any existing scores and assessments given using the rubric.
Other rubric tools
If you have created a Turnitin Assignment using the Turnitin option in the Assignments area, and you are marking assignments in Feedback Studio, you must use Turnitin’s Rubric Manager to add a rubric to your assignment.
