In this collection, you’ll find useful examples and solutions for accessible subject design. Here’s how you can use these resources.
If you’re looking to make your teaching resources more accessible, the following case studies can provide inspiration. Within this resource collection, you will find examples of solutions developed for various subjects, such as:
The importance of proactively designing for accessibility, is detailed in the final case study, where an entire subject was redesigned in anticipation for a student with specific accessibility needs.
This resource has been compiled by the Inclusive Practices Team, which offers comprehensive support, accessibility improvements, and upskilling opportunities to ensure that learning materials, activities, and assessments are accessible to all students.
The team is well-versed in the challenges faced by students with specific access needs and recognises the potential risks for universities when accessibility is not prioritised. Having earned the prestigious Accessibility in Action Award from ADCET (Australian Disability Clearinghouse on Education and Training) for two consecutive years, the team demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence in accessibility support.
This service is provided by the Inclusive Practices team in partnership with the Accessibility Service, offering subject coordinators assistance in enhancing the accessibility of their subject content. This includes tailored subject checks to ensure subjects are designed and delivered in an accessible format. Accessibility issues are noted during the subject checks, and then discussed in a consultation between the Subject Coordinator, Inclusive Practices and Accessibility Services. During the consultation, potential enhancements are discussed to improve accessibility within the subject, and are actioned by the team.
The team supports converting existing materials into accessible formats if subject coordinators commit to adopting accessible practices, engage in consultations, and approve revised content. New content cannot be generated as this requires subject-matter expertise to produce accessibility mechanisms such as alternative text or audio descriptions. However, the team can offer guidance on creating accessible materials and technical implementation. The team does not support third-party publisher content, but can assist with liaising with vendors to make suggested changes or improvements.
If you have a student with access requirements who needs customised resources, please contact us as soon as possible by submitting a request through Service Connect.
