Nelly’s Healing Centre is a service launching in February 2019 that will drive change for Aboriginal women and their families.
It will provide a place where women will be empowered to fight back against the intergenerational struggles that have been passed down to them, where they can start to heal themselves so that their children and grandchildren can live free from trauma, oppression and disadvantage.
Gomeroi and Biripi woman Helen Eason is using her experience as a service user and long-time supporter of women, men and young people in her community to develop a project that will be equipped to meet the needs of Aboriginal women and their families in their healing journeys.
We invite you to join us for the Vision Launch of this project, where Helen Eason will present her vision for Nelly’s Healing Centre and members of the UTS Architecture faculty will use virtual reality technology to offer a walk-through of their design showing what the centre could be.
Nelly’s Healing Centre will be a holistic, individually tailored, intensive support service embedded in culture. Aboriginal women and their families will be supported by wraparound services designed to enable them to embark on a journey of healing that will address the symptoms of intergenerational trauma, including addiction, violence and involvement in the criminal justice and child protection systems.
A property in the inner Sydney suburb of Camperdown is the site of the project’s pilot. The long-term aim is to expand to multiple locations, including a property set on acreage in rural NSW. Beginning at the Camperdown property, Nelly’s Healing Centre will transform the landscape of services available for Aboriginal women and their families by building on the evidence base showing that culture and healing is the way forward for Aboriginal people
