Summary
Learning by doing is a key technique in education. Experiential learning has long been used in ecology teaching, as getting students out in the field is an easy way to engage them with the topic. However, there is much more to ecology than field skills and so we need to think of engaging and effective ways to teach other relevant skills and knowledge. In this talk, Tim Curran will discuss a range of experiential techniques and approaches that I have used to teach ecology both in the field and the classroom, and look forward to hearing how others do the same!
Biography
Tim Curran is a Senior Lecturer in Ecology at Lincoln University and has been teaching ecology for about 15 years in Australia and New Zealand. He particularly enjoys teaching field ecology, which he has done to New Zealand, Australian, American and Japanese student groups. These days, when Tim is not teaching, he can be found studying plant flammability by burning plants on his BBQ.
