The idea of the “principles of the Treaty of Waitangi” has become a well-entrenched concept used to understand New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi documents. Today, references to the Treaty principles appear in numerous Acts of Parliament, Court judgments and Waitangi Tribunal reports. Despite this, the actual content of the Treaty principles remains contentious. This seminar will examine the origins and uses of the Principles device, and discuss how it has been applied to confuse, misdirect and placate New Zealanders about the Treaty and its intent in recent New Zealand politics and race relations.
