Supporting a compassionate community in higher education using play
We invite you to take a break from marking to come along and spend time with the FFYE community and Dr Maarten Koeners (University of Exeter), a science academic with a passion for play. In this Forum, Maarten aims to extend your idea of play and how it can be used to support a community that fosters joyous co-creation of knowledge and skills. Through your experiences with the activities, including some light preparation (pre-play activities), break-out sessions and group discussions, you will experience possible ways of integrating play in academic practice.
Academic, professional staff and students are invited to register for this forum.
Bio: Maarten Koeners has undertaken postdoctoral research addressing integrative physiology, and has become a Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter in 2019, where he has established his own research laboratory. His teaching experiences includes lectures, group sessions, and workshops supervising student projects and teaching both professional and personal skills. As a Lecturer, he is integrating insights in the physiology of play and playful learning with his academic practice (Koeners and Francis, 2020). The exciting next step he has taken is to establish the Playful University Club, to form global connections on the creation of holistic pedagogic practices for both students and educators – enabling individual and institutional play and playfulness to foster a culture that supports joyous, authentic transition to the co-creation of knowledge and skills, while counteracting a number of barriers to creativity and wellbeing.
