Emerging technologies are offering tremendous economic and societal opportunities. But the pace of change and the speed with which new technologies and their applications are emerging presents significant challenges, to business, policymakers, regulators and the wider community.

It is important for Australia to be forward-thinking and explore how emerging technologies will shape; how products and services will be produced and provided; where and how we work; the work we do; and the way social, health and human service will be provided.

This will require agile approaches to the investment in and regulation of emerging technologies to maximise the opportunities, manage potential risks and increase the likelihood that technologies enhance the public good.

Cross sector collaboration is key – to understand the possibilities; build shared commitment to advancing technology in the public interest; and to create the necessary capabilities, tools, frameworks, forums and institutions.

CEDA is initiating a program of conversations and presentations to drive this and UTS will be host CEDA’s first forum with keynote speaker, Laura Manly, the inaugural Director of the Technology and Public Purpose project at the Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center. This will be followed by a panel of industry and tertiary experts about how Australia can develop technology for public good.

Panel to include:

Laura Manley, Director of the Technology and Public Purpose Project

Prof Glenn Wightwick, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Innovation and Enterprise

Dr Ian Oppermann, Chief Data Scientist, NSW Department of Customer Service

Marcus Bartley Johns, Asia Regional Director, Government Affairs and Public Policy, Microsoft

Melinda Cilento, Chief Executive Officer, CEDA
